Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
This painting demonstrates Zini's passion for 19th-century Italian art, particularly Northern Italy. Indeed, the interpretation of this painting is closely tied to the styles of Divisionism. The subject itself, linked to country life and a poetics of agricultural labor, brings to mind Giovanni Segantini as a model. This stylistic signature is confirmed by the technique, which, while not employing color division, draws inspiration from it, applying it in tiny dabs. This chromatic explosion also contains a sulfurous, atmospheric light, reminiscent of the painter's close ties to the Milanese Scapigliatura movement.
Augusto Comazzini, known as Zini, is a Milanese painter and poet. He worked in administrative roles for several companies until 1978, when he retired and decided to devote himself to art. His first solo exhibition was in Sanremo that same year. For a long time, as director of the Centro Cultura Isola, he organized several exhibitions himself. His subjects include views, old farmhouses, and themes of rural life. His artistic language draws inspiration from the 19th century, Romanticism, and the Scapigliatura movement.
