Walter Valentini - Room of Time

The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.

Walter Valentini's artistic language is grounded in geometric abstraction. However, it should be noted that his rationalism stems not so much from the transfiguration of reality into pure forms, but from an aesthetic fascination with technique and design. Indeed, Valentini's works resemble actual work plans or architectural elevations, so rational that they become, indeed, abstract. Beauty lies in the perfection of lines, angles, and curves. In this work, Valentini demonstrates how his interest in the aesthetics of design also extends to the past, given the antiquated, Renaissance-inspired character of this work. The artist also pursues this quality by artificially creating an antique patina on the surface of the paper.

Walter Valentini was born in Pergola in 1928. He is internationally renowned as a painter, sculptor, and, above all, a printmaker, specializing in techniques such as etching, aquatint, drypoint, multi-color lithography, and copperplate engraving. Valentini's entire work is based on a geometric abstraction that draws on Russian Constructivism, but hybridizes it with the Italian Renaissance tradition. Valentini's aesthetic has also been influenced by astronomy and astrology.
