Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is a clear example of Expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no regard for spatial depth. The artist leaves a trace for the viewer to frame the subject within the rather concrete representation of the vegetation in the foreground. Yet everything is rendered through the pure expressiveness of color and the painter's gesture. Vittorio Bellini's entire perception of the landscape is transfigured in a whirlwind of calligraphic, vaporous brushstrokes and overlapping washes of color. Yet, in this expressive frenzy, the artist always maintains order and balance in the composition, unifying the entire surface in dominant hues. Particularly superb is Bellini's way of shading the sky's chromaticism with subtle transitions of tone. The colors are particularly brilliant and luminous, far transcending the naturalistic to acquire an emotional and spiritual significance.
Vittorio Bellini was born in Vertova in 1939 and passed away in 2009. Driven by a passion for painting, he attended nude painting courses at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, directed by Trento Longaretti. In 1960, together with De Amicis, Spilimbergo, Lilloni, and Longaretti, he participated in the Torri Prize at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan. In the following years, he won important awards and, driven by a curiosity to engage with the contemporary art scene, experimented with various techniques and styles. He was drawn to subjects related to everyday life, followed the explorations of Pop Art, and devoted himself to landscapes, which he created with soft lighting and romantic atmospheres. He then moved towards Expressionism, exploiting the density of pictorial matter. Later, he decided to paint the faces of war victims, using a personal technique that made them resemble visions. In 1994, he dedicated a series of works to Baudelaire's "Les fleurs du mal," and in the years that followed, he returned to the tragedy of war, particularly the Kosovo conflict. In 2000, he created sculptures using humble materials that convey messages about the meaning of pain. His latest works are dedicated to the world of childhood and children's drawings, as a reminder to live life with blissful innocence and serenity.
