Valéry Escalar - From Prehistory to the Third World

These silkscreens by Valèry Escalar are clearly the product of unconscious mental processes: dream interpretation, mental associations, and quotations. By triggering these mechanisms, the artist develops the sophisticated iconography of this series of prints. These prints, due to their bizarre juxtapositions and conveyed sense of alienation, can certainly be classified within the broader family of Surrealist art, but they are distinguished by a more intellectual bent, veering toward the realm of so-called "Cultured Painting."

When we talk about surrealism or citationism in painting, we always move within the realm of a figurative interpretation of the subject, bordering on hyperrealism. Here too, we find ourselves faced with images crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each detail meticulously defined. However, the limitations imposed by the technical medium of silkscreen ink, which precludes the use of shading and creates shadows through hatching, highlight, in this series, Valery Escalar's extraordinary drawing ability, which is less prominent in his paintings.

Valery Escalar, stage name Valeria Fiocchi, was born in Rome in 1932. Initially active in the music world as an opera singer, she later became a painter. She has received 360 awards, both for painting and graphics, and has participated in 110 solo exhibitions and 33 group exhibitions. Her works are held in the Vatican Pinacoteca, the Pontifical Seraficum Theological Faculty in Rome, the Italian Red Cross, the chapel of the Sant'Eugenio Hospital in Rome, the Regina Coeli Penitentiary, and the library of the Sacred Convent of Assisi. She has appeared on numerous television programs.
