Description of the work
Description of the work
A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has countless variations, from the simplest, featuring only the crucified Christ, to the version accompanied by the "mourners," the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. In the Middle Ages, Crucifixion scenes began to become increasingly elaborate: thieves' crosses were added, and gradually more and more figures were added, until they became the subject of large choral scenes. It is often accompanied by symbolic elements, such as the presence of the sun and moon or Adam's skull beneath Christ's cross (which signifies the redemptive action of Christ's Passion in the face of original sin).
Even when he temporarily abandons his explorations of pop icons to focus on other subjects, Valentino Marra's style remains distinctive. He begins with the image, enhancing its plastic qualities, highlighting its volume in an almost sculptural material. From here, the artist's colorful universe unfolds. The figure emits vibrations that translate into flowing colors that permeate the entire surface of the work. In this hand-retouched graphic, however, Marra leans toward a more traditional approach to the religious subject. The Crucifixion scene, in fact, is rendered with a very classical and traditional figurative language, in which the artist also stands out for his excellent naturalistic rendering. Marra, however, never abandons his flowing colors, which consistently define the work's expressionist and abstract space.
Valentino Marra, painter and sculptor, was born in Martano in 1956. He has exhibited his work in numerous shows in Italy and abroad, achieving considerable public and critical acclaim. He has created several altarpieces, but his work is primarily associated with reproductions of female icons, which are included in numerous public and private collections.
