Description of the work
Description of the work
In 2009, a collaboration agreement was signed between De Agostini , the leading brand in Italian cartography, and the prestigious Biblioteca Ambrosiana . This agreement led to the world-first facsimile reproduction of a true gem of ancient cartography , rich in symbols and details of history, geography, and legendary popular traditions: theMaggiolo Portolano , one of the most prestigious nautical charts of the past to have survived. Portolan charts , born in the Middle Ages as booklets written to aid sailors in navigation, began over time to be produced on parchment , often embellished with elegant miniatures. The parchments gradually became larger in size and the miniatures richer in color and symbols, transforming portolan charts into luxury objects destined for courts, to gratify their users with the pleasure of the imagination and to provide evidence of the power of the nobles and sovereigns, who commissioned and displayed them. Portolan charts also transferred to Renaissance courts the knowledge and depiction of the marine world , which was expanding enormously thanks to the great geographical discoveries . Created in 1602 by Iacopo Vesconte Maggiolo , descendant of the most important family of cartographers in Italy, this map is a classic example of a portolan intended for princes and powerful people: in fact, its decoration is rich, with a conspicuous presence of gold . Today UTET-De Agostini is offering a spectacular facsimile reproduction , faithful to the original in every detail and in a strictly limited and numbered edition, unique in the world. An exclusive object, allowing you to relive all the magic and fascination of the past.
