Description of the work
Description of the work
The Annunciation is a very popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, as well as Byzantine art. It is recurrent in all historical periods from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. The episode of the Annunciation is narrated in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark.
The painter Ulisse Sartini possesses exceptional technical skill in achieving a complete and technically perfect naturalistic rendering. The subjects' anatomy is depicted in minute detail, as is the volume, which, with a strong sculptural presence, allows the subjects to create their own space. In this way, the artist, both in his works on canvas and in his graphic works, achieves a perfect hyperrealism that is Ulisse Sartini's distinctive stylistic signature.
Ulisse Sartini was born in Piacenza in 1943. He is considered one of the leading exponents of the portrait genre, having executed several commissioned works for many celebrities and important figures. For example, he painted three portraits of Maria Callas (La Scala Theatre Museum in Milan, the New Megaron Music Theatre in Athens, and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice). A portrait of Luciano Pavarotti is exhibited at Covent Garden in London. A portrait of actress Audrey Hepburn is exhibited at the UNICEF headquarters.
