Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line.
The work features a recurring theme in Tono Zancarano's oeuvre: enlarged faces, occupying the entire surface of the work. The human figure is always reduced to a pure graphic line. However, the same line, through its complex, convoluted movement, gives the figure volume and physiognomy, despite the limited formal means.
Antonio Zancanaro (Padua 1906-1985), known as Tono, began painting only in 1932, after abandoning a promising sports career. He was self-taught, having trained in the Florentine anti-fascist movement with Ottone Rosai. His work primarily focuses on the humblest social situations, but always with a vein of fantasy, brought about by his lively, caricatural drawings.
