Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic or urban subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings.
The painting is emblematic of Tommaso Cascella's ability to modulate his pictorial language from post-Impressionist, almost expressionist, experimentation to a calm naturalism, as in this case. The execution displays a highly classical and traditional feel, with the broad perspective where the main subjects appear in the foreground. The quick, luminous brushstroke is fully influenced by the late nineteenth-century atmosphere.
Tommaso Cascella was born in Ortona in 1890 and died in Pescara in 1968. His training began in his father Basilio's workshop, where he contributed illustrations to the book "La Vita Abruzzese." His first exhibition was held in Milan in 1909, followed by shows in Turin and Paris. At the outbreak of the First World War, he went to the front to depict wartime events. In 1918, he settled permanently in Pescara. Tommaso Cascella focused primarily on the pastoral world of Abruzzo, even going through a post-Impressionist phase in his artistic career.
