Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
The interpretation of this subject shows us how the painter Tiziano Bertacco was at the forefront of a fully developed Cubist phase. We can appreciate how the Venetian artist understood the spirit of Picasso's teachings and then transferred them to painting. There is, first, a process of mechanical transformation of the subject, which acquires geometric forms within a solid volume that highlights its plasticity. These same forms are then arranged in a fragmented space, divided by multiple linear directions and different viewpoints. The faces, with their iconic expressiveness, are reminiscent of something archaic. The color is applied in a compact manner, with spiritual and symbolist allusions.
Tiziano Bertacco was born in San Donà di Piave in 1951. His career began when he moved to Milan in 1974. He collaborated for a time with the Arte Militante collective, then with the Situazione group, with which he created various murals and panels. From 1900 to 2000, he participated in or organized many important exhibitions both in Italy and throughout Europe. In 2002, he moved to Thailand, establishing relationships throughout Southeast Asia.
