Silù - Untitled Polyptych

The work draws on a pop aesthetic in its use of iconic elements of mass society. Pop Art was born in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as an interest/critique by artists of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art presuppose a sort of double bond with the world of consumerism and the mass media. On the one hand, the artwork is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. On the other, it is the advertising images and consumer goods themselves that become works of art, as the most genuine and truthful expression of the new society.

The composition is based on the repetition of an image that could be assimilated to consumer society. The image is reproduced with a deliberately fake and suggestive realism, somewhat reminiscent of a comic book, a display of remarkable technique by the artist. The hyperrealistic rendering focuses primarily on the lips; the rest of the painting, however, displays a dirty, gestural painterly style that recontextualizes the image and makes it more poetic.

The artist Silù draws inspiration from an artistic language rooted in pop aesthetics, choosing images related to consumer society. Silù develops a personal style by hybridizing these images with gestural pictorialism, a process similar to that of Mario Schifano and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo.
