Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material with which they compose their works. Throughout his long career, artist Sergio Bizzarri has experimented with various stylistic languages, and alongside a figurative movement, he has also developed a highly interesting Informal art movement.
This work is part of a series in which Spoleto-born artist Sergio Bizzarri abandons figurative art for informal art. The painting is grounded in color, texture, and painterly gesture. These three elements combine on the canvas to create compositions in which form takes a backseat, allowing for the unleashing of creative energy. His pictorial application establishes a close dialogue of suggestions and stimuli on the canvas, arising from the coexistence of textures and overlapping layers of material. The black, almost calligraphic or layered strokes found in much of Sergio Bizzarri's work, including his figurative style, remain. All of this occurs with perfect compositional coherence, demonstrating the painter's skill in conceiving and completing his works. Indeed, Bizzarri's entire palette is designed to conform to a precise tonal unity of earthy nuances.
Sergio Bizzarri was born in Spoleto in 1931. From a young age, he was driven by a passion for art, to which he devoted himself fully from the 1950s onwards. It was during this period that he began organizing his first exhibitions and developed his monochromatic language, dominated by black lines. By the 1960s, he was already active internationally, exhibiting at increasingly prestigious art fairs and exhibitions in Italy, as well as in France, Australia, Canada, the United States, and Japan. In 1977, for his many and varied achievements, Bizzarri was named a Knight of the Italian Republic. In 1992, the Marche Region and the Municipality of Ancona organized the first retrospective exhibition of Maestro Bizzarri at the Palazzo degli Anziani in the capital city of the Marche region, with an introduction by art critic Dario Micacchi.
