Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting is inspired by the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
The work interprets the subject of the Madonna and Child with a highly classicist spirit. The artist interprets the work according to the values of harmony and balance typical of the Italian tradition. This inspiration from classicism and Renaissance values can also be deduced from the artist's pursuit of monumentality in his figure and an exaltation of volume.
The classical calm with which this work was created suggests an artist from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It was likely an artist from a local school, given the certain stereotyped depiction of the figures' faces and the very dry technique that eschews highly pictorial effects. However, the decisive choice of a chiaroscuro color scheme could confirm its affinity with the Neapolitan painting scene.
