Description of the work
Description of the work
Author's copy, three-dimensional reconstruction of the chromatic features through the use of oil pigments on wood and gilding with pure gold leaf.
The work is a perfect reproduction of one of the panels that make up the predella of a large triptych executed in 1437 by Fra Angelico for the Chapel of St. Nicholas in the Church of San Domenico in Perugia. The three panels of the predella illustrate events from the life of St. Nicholas, the chapel's patron saint. This reproduction depicts the Meeting of St. Nicholas with the Imperial Messenger, the Rescue of a Shipload of Grain for the City of Myra, and the Miraculous Rescue of a Ship from a Shipwreck. This master copy is part of the "Exempla Perfecta" series, produced by the Vatican Museums.
This work is a particularly exemplary example of Beato Angelico's style, which is faithfully reproduced. This painter's distinctive trait, in the second half of the 15th century, was his constant mediation between Renaissance innovations and the medieval influences of late Gothic culture. This is evident in every work by Beato Angelico, where the commitment to a naturalistic rendering with a concrete definition of perspective follows the dictates of the Renaissance. Everything, however, is shrouded in a fairytale atmosphere typical of the Gothic spirit. This can be seen in the trussed depiction of the buildings, in the darting and abstract linearity of the landscape, and, above all, in the brilliance of the colors.
The work in question is a perfect copy of the original, created as part of the "Exemplaria Perfecta" project developed by the Vatican Museums. In this context, an innovative technique was developed, used for the first time in the world, allowing for the perfect three-dimensional reconstruction of the chromatic strokes. The in-depth knowledge of ancient painting techniques, combined with the use of this extraordinary artistic technique, has allowed for the creation of works of extraordinary craftsmanship with previously unmatched results.
