Description of the work
Description of the work
It is not easy, specifically, to establish the subject of this work. The painting undoubtedly depicts a scene of ecstasy in which the protagonist, likely a holy monk, is supported by two brothers as he falls into a swoon. The painter depicts this visionary event in a decontextualized setting illuminated by a fiery background. The only iconographic attributes, rather generic, that the artist introduced to identify the saintly protagonist are the miter and crosier, resting on the ground, indicative of the saint's episcopal, if not papal, dignity. On a shelf, instead, is a book, a symbol of wisdom, which often, as in this case, is accompanied by a skull, reiterating the awareness of mortality and the transience of earthly things.
The work appears well-crafted, and the artist undoubtedly possesses excellent painting technique. The artist appears to operate within a context that combines rigorous classicism with a more specifically Baroque flair. Indeed, we can see how the compact group of three figures has been executed with impeccable naturalistic rendering and a monumentality typical of a classical conception of art. The naturalistic rendering is flawless, and the group is compositionally united by a seamless sequence of gestures. However, the classical harmony underlying the depiction of this scene seems to give way to a more Baroque sensibility, as the three figures' volumes are enhanced by their flowing robes, which billow out in a curved rhythm. But it is especially in the space surrounding the scene that we can sense the artist's strong Baroque influence. Indeed, in contrast to the compactness that characterizes the execution of the three figures, in defining the background, the painter indulges in a highly atmospheric pictorial style. Everything is bathed in a fiery light that dissolves the shapes of the clouds and the cherubs witnessing the saint's ecstasy. This creates a highly evocative contrast, thanks to the use of light, where the dark and compact group of three stands out against an undefined and evanescent space.
As we can see from an analysis of this work, the artist moves between a rigorous classicism and a more whimsical, Baroque-inspired sensibility. Based on these elements, the work can be dated between the 17th and 18th centuries. The artist demonstrates an excellent technique that allows him to achieve a perfect naturalistic rendering combined with highly theatrical pictorial effects of light and atmosphere.
