Description of the work
Description of the work
The praying women are Saverio Terruso's most recurring iconographic subject. They are female figures, wrapped in loose tunics that reveal only their faces and hands. Often, in Terruso's works, they are reproduced in series, one next to the other, almost as a decorative motif. This subject has strong popular connotations and demonstrates the close connection between Terruso's art and his homeland.
The lithograph is a prime example of Saverio Terruso's style. This work revisits the serial reproduction of the "praying women," which also corresponds to a sort of metaphysical space in the portico in the background. Terruso's expressionism prevails here, as the figures, reduced to their essentials, are synthesized by a black graphic line. The outlined forms are filled with color, which has not a naturalistic but essentially spiritual significance.
Saverio Terruso was a painter born in Monreale in 1939 and passed away in 2003. His artistic career began in 1963 and grew through collaborations with artists such as Guttuso, Sassu, and Fiume. His works have been exhibited in numerous shows, not only in Italy, but also in the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. He is represented in several Italian and international collections. His artistic language can be described as expressionism, revealing a certain folksy inclination, undoubtedly derived from Terruso's Mediterranean roots.
