Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this sculpture certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau and Odilon Redon, who, in addition to complex iconography, also sought a certain formal abstraction. In this specific case, in his interpretation of Peace, Salvatore Fiume does not choose the mythological iconography of Eirene (a woman with a child in her arms) but creates an image that draws inspiration from a Christian rather than mythological imagery. She is depicted as a childlike figure, whose sacredness is emphasized by the halo surrounding her head. Enveloped in drapery, she imparts a blessing with her right hand, while in her left she holds a globe, a symbol of universality.
This work is part of a series of bas-reliefs, dedicated to religious or mythological themes, in which Salvatore Fiume draws inspiration from classical culture, resulting in a quest for naturalism and compositional balance. The subject's statuesque build, evident despite the work's small size, is well-proportioned, and his features are expressive. The composition is perfectly harmonious, based on fluid, sinuous rhythms dictated by the lines of the body and drapery. As always in Fiume's small bas-reliefs, the space is balanced, and the subject is perfectly central and frontal, fully adhering to the principles of harmony and symmetry. Although the figure has a monumental connotation, a certain archaic and iconic quality prevails in the representation. Fiume, in fact, clearly intends to recapture a primordial type of abstraction, typical of ancient civilizations. This is why the figure's volumes appear to expand and swell, both in the body and in the facial features.
Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso and passed away in Milan in 1997. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, he was also an architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered in an expressionist manner.
