Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
The style of the painter Salvatore Azzù is founded primarily on the expressive value of the line. The painter uses bold lines to construct his subjects with a highly structured composition. The subjects are quickly synthesized within a composition charged with linear rhythm and expressive vigor. Even the color is applied with an almost gestural texture, lending strength to Azzù's expressionist language.
Salvatore Azzù was a painter originally from Sassari, born in 1924 and died in 2004. A friend and colleague of Costantino Spada, unlike the other great Sassari painter, he was self-taught. His works are present in several public and private collections. Throughout his long career, he participated in numerous national and regional competitions, attracting the favor of many critics and collectors.
