Description of the work
Description of the work
Salvador Dalí was an icon of Surrealism, a 20th-century avant-garde literary and artistic movement that sought to unleash the creative potential of the unconscious through art characterized by dreamlike imagery. The movement developed in the footsteps of philosopher Sigmund Freud, the first to explore the subconscious in all its irrationality, theories later elaborated in André Breton's 1924 Surrealist Manifesto.
Dalí's fantastical prints, paintings, sculptures, films, and writings helped solidify the movement's identity. Drawing on psychoanalytic ideas and psychic automatism, Dalí depicted fantastical creatures and landscapes capable of disturbing and astonishing. He exhibited widely during his lifetime, and his works are included in the collections of institutions such as the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He is now an iconic artist, whose influence continues to extend far beyond Surrealism, permeating the collective imagination and contemporary visual culture.
