Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The painting is a perfect example of Romolo Pontecorvi's pictorial style. Indeed, we can see how, even in landscape painting, the artist tends to transfigure reality into an abstraction dominated by the color red. Pontecorvi leaves aside reference points to grasp reality: a landscape rendered synthetic by the painter's almost gestural brushstrokes. However, the entire composition is overturned by color, transforming the perceptible world into a sort of abstract expressionism.
Romolo Pontecorvi was a Roman artist. A monochrome painter on Via Margutta and a pupil of Guttuso, he studied at the Via Ripetta school. Known in Rome as the "red painter," he died in 2002.
