Description of the work
Description of the work
The codex (containing the Old French verses of the Roman d'Alexandre and other poems dedicated to the epic of Alexander the Great, the Middle English text of the Alexander and Dindimus in alliterated verse and the account of Marco Polo's travels, entitled Livres du graunt Caam), written and illuminated first in Belgium, in the city of Tournai, in the first half of the 14th century, then in London, in the first decade of the following century, is preserved at the Bodleian Library in Oxford (facsimile edition and commentary 2014).
An important example not only of ars illuminandi but of stylistic multilingualism, the large codex testifies to the growing interest in travel, exploration, and the Orient, and is considered one of the most precious of the medieval period.
