| Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their attention primarily on the figure of the clown. |

The subject of the painting depicts a clown playing the trumpet in the center of the circus ring. The composition, constructed from a series of concentric circles, within which the character stands out slightly off-center, accentuates the sense of solitude suggested by the scene. The rather stylized treatment of the forms also contributes to the same goal, conveying a sense of melancholic emptiness to the viewer. The painting was done by Rodolfo Soldi, a ninety-two-year-old painter still active, very popular in the Monferrato area. |
