Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts an unusual view of Milan's Piazza Duomo. Indeed, almost from a bird's eye view, the painting shows us the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II seen from above, from the Duomo's terrace. This creates a forest of spires in the foreground that frame the focal point of the painting.
The artist chooses an almost monochrome palette, exploring various shades of blue, making the work appear almost ethereal in its azure hues. Prina skillfully plays with perspective, intersecting diagonal and vertical lines, creating a grid that contributes to the painting's depth. These compositional intentions are further underscored by the delicate interplay of light and shadow.
Roberto Prina is a Milanese painter born in 1936. At a young age, he worked in graphic art, primarily using lithography. He later turned to painting, first in oils and then in watercolor. Watercolor became his specialty, eventually practicing it almost exclusively in his studio along the Navigli canals. He joined the Italian Watercolorists Association and several art groups. He exhibited his work in national and international shows, and his watercolors are held in private collections in Paris, Galway, Bilbao, Seattle, Boston, San Diego, and beyond.
