Democritus' laughter and Heraclitus' tears

I began this painting in February 2021, after my first visit to the Vatican Museums. Inspired by the figures in the Raphael Rooms, I created the scene of the two philosophers to express something of our time. This theme was widely discussed in the 17th century, when there was much uncertainty, where new geographical and astronomical discoveries had shattered all old worldviews, and the Counter-Reformation Church forcibly prevented the expression of these ideas.
I saw this again in our days and that's why I wanted to propose this subject again with my technique.
