Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
A representative of the New Italian Mannerism group, Renato Nosek places great importance on figuration and a direct connection with phenomenal reality. For this reason, Nosek revisits a type of naturalism reminiscent of antiquity, cloaked in a sixteenth- or seventeenth-century patina. Thus, in this work, the Caravaggesque play of light, which lifts the subjects from the dark background, is fundamental. The pictorial quality is high, in a brushstroke that, while naturalistic, can also be synthetic when necessary.
Renato Nosek was born in Venice in 1946. He has been a professor of painting since 1971. Since 1968, his works have been exhibited in numerous shows both in Italy and abroad. Many of his oil paintings on canvas are part of public and private collections. Many of his copperplate engravings are included in publishing projects. In 1990, he joined the "Nuova Maniera Italiana" group.
