Description of the work
Description of the work
The print can be considered a sketch, an artist's proof, which nonetheless constitutes a valuable testimony to Renato Guttuso's artistic output. The simple subject of the stool, with its jacket thrown carelessly and casually over the back, is a beautiful example of the realism with which Guttuso viewed the world, unfiltered and unidealized.
This is a high-quality print, reflected in the bold, black lines typical of Renato Guttuso, who, with just a few strokes, constructs a tangible, concrete reality. This brings us back to two fundamental elements in the Sicilian painter's art, well expressed in this graphic work. First, his realism, found in the concreteness and richness of detail of his representation. And, consequently, the careful exploration of volumes, the almost geometric exaltation of forms, which are laid out in a space with multiple perspective directions.
Renato Guttuso, born in Bagheria in 1911 and died in Rome in 1987, was a painter deeply involved in politics and social issues. His artistic commitment stemmed from his socialist ideals and his outrage over social injustice and abuses of power. He participated in the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti group, developing a Realist-Expressionist style of painting and developing his "social art." Guttuso's most important works, expressing his Neorealist art, were masterpieces such as Ficilazione in Campagna (Fucilation in the Countryside) and Fuga dall'Etna (Escape from Etna). He was also elected senator twice, in 1976 and 1979, for the Italian Communist Party.
