The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi. The lithography is clearly an "artist's proof" in which Renato Guttuso sought to refine his drawing technique. The composition achieves a maximum naturalistic rendering even through the simple formal medium of lithography. In addition to the extraordinary precision in capturing sensory data, Guttuso brought it to life through the play of shadows that gently blur the contours and render them undefined. Renato Guttuso, born in Bagheria in 1911 and died in Rome in 1987, was a painter deeply involved in politics and social issues. His artistic commitment stemmed from his socialist ideals, his contempt for social injustice and abuses of power. He participated in the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti group, developing a Realist-Expressionist style of painting, thus developing his "social art."
