Description of the work
Description of the work
A prominent figure in the communist movement and a famous painter, Renato Guttuso was born in Bagheria on December 26, 1911. His parents, due to conflicts with the Bagheria municipal administration over their liberal beliefs, chose to register his birth in Palermo on January 2, 1912. Guttuso's talent was precocious, and at just thirteen he began to date and sign his paintings. At just seventeen (1928), he had the opportunity to hold his first exhibition in Palermo. His first paintings depicted Sicilian peasants and fellow villagers; among his famous works are "Escape from Etna" from 1937, and "Vuccirria," which celebrates the popular market of Palermo. His purely figurative execution addresses themes of the peasant and rural world, social issues, and overtly political subjects. He moved to Rome, where he formed friendships and professional relationships with the painters Birolli, Fontana, and Persico. At the outbreak of World War II, Guttuso painted a series of paintings entitled "Gott mit Uns"—"God is with us"—a motto engraved on the buckles of Nazi soldiers. His polemical message emerged forcefully. His ideological expression reached its peak with the work "The Funeral of Togliatti," which became a manifesto of anti-fascism. In the postwar period, he stylistically followed Pablo Picasso's early period, the so-called "Blue Period." In 1946, he founded the "Fronte Nuovo delle Arti," together with Birolli, Vedova, Morlotti, and Turcato. In the late 1960s, he produced paintings reflecting the situation in Europe and France. He moved to Paris, where he portrayed young people at the first protest marches in what would later become the legendary "French May."
