Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
From these two pencil and charcoal portraits by Raffaele Spizzico, we can see how a great artist manages to create a lively and distinctive portrait with few formal means. The artist uses a few incisive strokes, achieving an excellent physiognomic and introspective description with a caricature-like flavour.
Raffaele Spizzico was a famous painter and ceramist from Bari, born in 1912 and who died in 2003. In 1939, he opened the "Spizzico Ceramiche" factory with his brother Francesco. He taught and collaborated at the academies of Bari and Lecce. The Spizzico brothers won the Ceramics Competition organized by the Faenza Museum in 1965. Some of their works were also exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial.
