Description of the work
Description of the work
Antonio di Pietro Averlino , or Averulino , known as Filarete (Florence, c. 1400 – Rome, 1469), was an Italian sculptor, architect, and architectural theorist. He played an important role in the early development of some concepts of Renaissance architecture and urban planning, particularly the "ideal city." The humanist nickname by which he is predominantly known, chosen by himself, means "he who loves virtue."
If Filarete's style places him between the medieval and Renaissance worlds, on a cultural level his vision is fully humanist.
The Church itself, which commissioned the portal, demonstrates how ancient myths of prosperity can inhabit and adorn a sacred place. Humanistic Christianity, therefore, restores value to the myths and cultures that preceded it.
