Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the work was taken from Jean Louis Prevost, a famous French engraver who lived between 1760 and 1810, specializing in the reproduction of plants and flowers. The visual arts have always had a close connection with the world of biology, both animal and plant. The graphic representation of the species studied has always been fundamental, both for classification and for scientific analysis. For this reason, objective representations of plants and animals have always been necessary, and these gained momentum especially in the 18th and 19th centuries, a period in which scientific research was most widespread. It is worth remembering how the studies of Linnaeus and Darwin, in particular, provided a significant impetus to the study and classification of animal and plant species.

The print combines two very specific purposes: to serve the classification of plant species and to simultaneously provide a refined aesthetic framework with the exact reproduction of an ancient vase. Formally, since it is a type of image with scientific and imitative purposes, it cannot be filtered by any artistic vision and must rely on a completely objective representation. Its beauty therefore lies in the scientific and detailed precision with which the subject is rendered. The drawing demonstrates extraordinary technical skill in capturing the image in every minute detail with a noble didactic intent.
The engraving was created by the Cattier et Villain printing house, inspired by the work of Jeal Louis Prevost.
