Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Pino Procopio, in his artistic production, reworked the genre scene in a grotesque and caricatural vein. He invented a world populated by charming, flesh-like characters with highly accentuated facial features, depicted in a wide variety of poses and situations that can verge on the surreal.
Even in his graphic works, Pino Procopio fully embraces his highly elaborate aesthetic. The fundamental component of his work is an objectivity rooted in a "magical realism" that straddles the everyday and the surreal. Procopio has constructed his own pictorial world along this path, interpreting the exaltation of plasticity typical of objective figurative languages in a decidedly sarcastic and grotesque manner. Thus, his works are populated by his unmistakable plump characters and caricature-like faces, and the dryness of his style, which would normally create a cold, metaphysical atmosphere, is completely tempered by this aesthetic of abundance, rounded volumes, and masks. Everything then becomes a vivid representation of the joy of living and happiness in small things, where even the ever-present irony is indulgent and devoid of moralistic pretensions.
Pino Procopio, a refined and ironic painter, was born in Guardavalle, Calabria, on June 16, 1954. From early childhood, he was drawn to the clay surrounding the building, with which he modeled neo-primitive sculptures. He attended the first two years of art high school in Catanzaro. From his earliest years, he demonstrated a marked predilection for artistic subjects. After completing high school, he enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Rome. During his stay in the capital, he frequented various galleries and met numerous artists. Numerous galleries and public spaces hosted his solo exhibitions, increasing his fame throughout Italy and, especially, internationally.
