Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. Likewise, the messages of Piero Leddi's works are always highly symbolic, with cosmic scope, reflecting this artist's fascination with archaic languages.
In his works, artist Piero Leddi always seeks a balance between volumetric rendering and expressionism. Leddi is particularly interested in the formal exaltation of the subject, which in this painting is expressed through a marked plasticity. At the same time, Leddi imbues the representation with a highly lyrical and expressive quality. In this work, exploiting the properties of color, he creates a vibrant application of color. The subject's volumetric mass is highlighted by white reflections, but the group within it is characterized by an intense chromatic dynamism of blue tones.
Piero Leddi (San Sebastiano Curone 1930–2016) learned the techniques of working with materials from his carpenter father and other artisan relatives, while his relationship with the land and agriculture was deeply rooted in his mother's family. After moving to Tortona, he began painting, influenced by Mario Patri. In Milan from 1951, he initially devoted himself to graphic design, experimenting with his own means of expression and coming into contact with the Brera movement. From the 1950s, his work attracted the attention of critics such as Mario De Micheli and Raffaele De Grada, who presented some of his first solo exhibitions in 1959 and 1964, respectively, and subsequently followed his production closely. He has participated in numerous solo and very numerous group exhibitions, including the National Art Biennial of the City of Milan (in 1972, 1974, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1993).
