Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
Piero Garino's painting style is highly recognizable. The artist is not so much interested in contextualizing what he's painting or in rendering it naturally. Garino is primarily interested in the expressive possibilities of color. In this scene, we can see how there's almost no real space in which the boats move. Sea and sky merge into one, and depth is perceived only through the artist's complex brushstrokes. The touches of dense color, moving across different planes, attempt to reconstruct and follow the movement of the water and the crashing of the waves against the hulls. The same multifaceted and dynamic brushstroke delineates the white sails billowing in the wind. In a two-dimensional surface, therefore, everything is constructed by color and Piero Garino's complex pictorial technique.
Piero Garino was a renowned Piedmontese painter. He was born in Leini in 1922 and passed away in Turin in 2009. He was almost entirely self-taught. After attending an evening art school in Turin, he painted while working as a bartender. His first exhibition was in 1948, in a group show for young Piedmontese artists, and that same year, his first solo show was held at the Il Grifo gallery. From 1950 to 1958, he was invited to the Venice Biennale and participated in the Rome Quadrennial. His works have been exhibited in New York, Paris, Nice, Moscow, Prague, Budapest, Sofia, Munich, and Beirut.
