Description of the work
Description of the work
The figure of a young woman presented by the artist is depicted as if behind stained-glass windows. Portraiture has always been a beloved subject for artists. From its earliest days, portraiture was reserved for prominent figures. It served as a means of characterizing a person's features by emphasizing their clothing and their posture within the canvas. The genre became popular during the Renaissance, when aristocratic and noble families used portraiture as an official medium. Over the centuries, especially towards the end of the 19th and the mid-20th centuries, portraiture increasingly established itself as a means of depicting everyday reality, also bringing psychological aspects to the surface.
The painter's style in this case is innovative, with a brushstroke intended to express the young woman's reflection behind a glass. The pastel tones are very delicate and cool the figure, lending it an expressive figurative style. Although we cannot discern the details of the figure, the expressive quality is provided by the vibrant, transparent painting.
PierLuigi Monticone, known as Gigi Montico, was born in Malnate in 1943 and now lives in Dovera (Cremona). In Milan he attended courses at the Scuola Superiore d'Arte at the Sforza Castle and the Nude Courses at the Brera Academy. He was one of the founders of the "Gruppo P4", the "Accademia del Sole" and later the "Accademia del Sale". His first exhibition dates back to 1968 in Milan and many of his works have been shown in numerous group exhibitions in France (1970), Germany (1971), Ireland (1973), Portugal and Switzerland (1975) as well as in many other Italian cities including Milan, Bologna, Verona, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Rapallo, Padua, Moneglia, Diamante, Turin, Padua, Treviso.
