Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
A typical example of Pasquale Filannino's pictorial style. This artist's vision is based on a fundamentally Pop aesthetic, according to which reality is interpreted through mass media languages. In Filannino's case, his landscapes visually recall a comic book style. The painting's structure is determined by a black graphic line that, with a certain stylization, delineates the contours of the objects and highlights their volumes. Reality is thus simplified in order to emphasize the complexity of the design. Thus, the surface is divided into countless fields, which are filled with a single layer of solid color. At this point, the artist's mastery in managing the balance and contrast between the different groups of colors within the composition comes into play.
Pasquale Filannino is a painter originally from Cerignola, where he was born in 1942, but lives and works in Turin. He began painting in watercolor under the guidance of Angelo Bosio. His artistic career took off in 1962, when he began exhibiting throughout Italy and abroad. His favorite subjects are Piedmontese landscapes, which he interprets with a graphic sensibility that is aesthetically striking and closely related to Pop art.
