Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
The work is a perfect example of the pictorial language prevalent in the work of artist Paolo da San Lorenzo. The subject is reshaped through a process of mechanization inspired by the stylistic elements of post-Cubism. In this sense, the figure is emptied of its consistency, and the entire composition is based on the geometric scansion created by the cuts of the multiple directions and viewpoints. The color is applied compactly, without painterly effects, and pursues the aggressiveness of bright, almost Fauvist hues.
Paolo da San Lorenzo was born in San Lorenzo in Campo in 1935. His artistic training took place primarily in Paris, where he was introduced to post-Cubism. He began exhibiting his works in a series of shows not only in Italy but also throughout Europe. In 1990, his work was included in the Mondadori catalogue. He participated in numerous international art fairs from 1999 to 2014, including Miart Milan, Arte Fiera Bologna, Arte Verona, the Australian Contemporary Art Fair Melbourne, St'Art Stasbourg, and KunstRai Amsterdam.
