Description of the work
One of the most important concepts in the history of artistic production has been that of "mimesis," or the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. Nature refers to everything that can be grasped through the five senses—in short, phenomenal reality. Figurative art trends can be considered those that, in the representation of the world, adhere most closely to this objective and sensorial dimension, leaving little room for abstraction and subjective interpretation.
In this sculpture, Antonio Bassi demonstrates his skill as a sculptor in achieving a fully naturalistic rendering of the subject. The physiognomic precision that places this sculpture in a realistic context is combined with the intensity of the expression. Reality, therefore, is conveyed in all its aspects without any idealization, even with particular attention to the details of the accessories and clothing. All this is possible thanks to Paolo Annibali's extraordinary sculptural technique.
Paolo Annibali is an artist from San Benedetto del Tronto, where he was born in 1958 and where he lives and works. He is primarily a sculptor and has completed numerous commissions, especially in the religious field. Among his many works are the Chapel of the Resurrection, Church of St. Pius X, San Benedetto del Tronto, 1994–2009; the Door of Mercy for the Church of St. Philip Neri, San Benedetto del Tronto, 1997; the Door of the Holy Spirit, Church of St. Pius X, San Benedetto del Tronto, 1998; and the doors of the Church of Regina Pacis, Matelica, Macerata, 2001.
