Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The artistic output of painter Paola Serra Zanetti stands out for its excellent portraiture, making her a true specialist in the genre. Her portraits are based on a completely naturalistic rendering of body and facial features. In this sense, we can see how the painter's language leans toward a certain realism, depicting every detail with absolute truthfulness. This artist's distinctive style lies in her technique, which relies on a hatching technique executed with long, oblique brushstrokes (as seen especially in the background). This gives her subjects a warm, painterly quality that makes their surfaces come alive and vibrant. Also in line with this concept of portraiture is her color palette, which seeks out light, pastel tones that convey a sensation of softness to the touch.
Paola Serra Zanetti was a painter originally from Budrio, born in 1886 and died in 1963. Little is known about her life. She specialized in portraits, which she created using a variety of techniques: pastels, pencil, and oil paints. Her works are held in several private collections.
