Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The painting is an example of Pál Fried's pictorial style, whose portraiture combines a soft naturalistic rendering with a painterly hatching of impressionist influence. As we can see in this ballerina, the artist is capable of achieving a completely naturalistic rendering of the complexion, the softness of the flesh, blending the surfaces with a delicate play of shadows. The approach to the dress is different, for which even the tulle fabric itself lends itself to quick, immediate treatment. An impressionistic hatching, full of luminous vibrations, is more suited to depicting the reflections of light and the movements of the tutu in space.
Pál Fried (Budapest 1893, New York City 1976) was a painter known for the sensuality of his portraits, especially of ballerinas. In Hungary, he studied with the painter Hugo Pohl, later moving to Paris, where he became a pupil of Claude Monet and was influenced by the Impressionists, especially Renoir and Degas. After World War II, he emigrated to the United States, where he also painted many celebrity portraits, including that of Marilyn Monroe.
