Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this work, we can appreciate how artist Ottavio Carboni's style, even in the portraiture genre, is founded on a perfect expressive balance between naturalistic rendering and color synthesis. Indeed, the female figure appears in all its naturalness and anatomical truth, thanks to the painter's perfect technique, which manages to depict the face with vivacity and a sense of plasticity. The figure's surface, however, is softened by the light, making it appear alive and vibrant. The artist achieves a marked formal synthesis: especially in the definition of the dress and the mass of hair, the application becomes more synthetic and expressionistic. In this way, the artist manages to ensure greater freshness and immediacy in the execution.
Ottavio Carboni was born in Sassari in 1927. As a young man, he frequented the poet Salvatore Ruju and trained in the studio of Giuseppe Biasi. After returning from World War II, he moved to Rome, where he attended restoration courses between 1946 and 1950. Meanwhile, he supported himself by working as an occasional actor at the Cinecittà studios. Returning to Sassari, he earned his artistic diploma in 1957 and carried out several important restorations. Throughout his career, Ottavio Carboni has received many important awards, and his works are held in important private and public collections such as the Pinacoteca di Vicenza.
