Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
The style of painter Ottavio Carboni can undoubtedly be defined as expressionist. He begins with a marked formal synthesis of subjects, which are outlined with thick black strokes. The space is two-dimensional, and the composition is resolved through compact fields of color in very bright tones. At the same time, Carboni is also capable of modulating a more energetic application, made of thick brushstrokes that make the representation more lively and vibrant. In this sense, a characteristic of this artist and highly recurrent in his works (especially in his landscapes) is a way of distributing color densely in large, square strokes. In this way, the expressive qualities of color are associated with a structural function that makes the pictorial surface extremely complex.
Ottavio Carboni was born in Sassari in 1927. As a young man, he frequented the poet Salvatore Ruju and trained in the studio of Giuseppe Biasi. After returning from World War II, he moved to Rome, where he attended restoration courses between 1946 and 1950. Meanwhile, he supported himself by working as an occasional actor at the Cinecittà studios. Returning to Sassari, he earned his artistic diploma in 1957 and carried out several important restorations. Throughout his career, Ottavio Carboni has received many important awards, and his works are held in important private and public collections such as the Pinacoteca di Vicenza.
