Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this painting, one can see how Osman Lorenzo De Scolari treats the subject with a post-impressionist technique that almost verges on expressionism. The brushstrokes, broad and textured, sometimes filled with light, construct the objects. Each brushstroke is placed on a different plane, creating the subject's volume. The whole is characterized by a highly pictorial quality that almost dissolves the forms and space in the background, giving the work a powerful expressiveness.
Osman Lorenzo De Scolari was born in Palermo in 1908 and died in Florence, the city where his artistic career unfolded, in 1998. His main output consisted of portraits and still lifes. His style ranged from traditional figurative art to more expressive pictorial explorations.
