Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
In this painting, one can see how Osman Lorenzo De Scolari treats the subject with a post-impressionist technique that almost verges on expressionism. The brushstrokes, broad and textured, sometimes filled with light, construct the objects. Each brushstroke is placed on a different plane, creating the volume of the fruit and dishes. The whole is characterized by a highly pictorial quality that almost dissolves the shapes and the space in the background, giving the work a powerful expressiveness.
Osman Lorenzo De Scolari was born in Palermo in 1908 and died in Florence, the city where his artistic career unfolded, in 1998. His main output consisted of portraits and still lifes. His style ranged from traditional figurative art to more expressive pictorial explorations.
