Description of the work
Description of the work
A highly prized work published by Treccani, in a limited edition of 599 hand-numbered copies worldwide, featuring a cover made of all-leather, dyed and hand-sponged over wooden boards, with triple gold-wrought borders on the boards and a spine with five raised bands forming six boxes. Gilding also occurs inside the boxes and on the raised bands. This is a complete and faithful reproduction of the Canon. Misc. 378 manuscript, preserved in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. It is accompanied by a volume of approximately 250 pages, bound in parchment, with commentary by scholars such as Luciano Canfora, Jonathan J.G. Alexander, and Arnaldo Marcone, accompanied by color plates that offer interesting comparisons with other contemporary codices. Volume entirely hand-sewn with rough twisted coban thread using a loom and the two-color headpiece hand-sewn with gold thread, presents 109 miniatures made with hot gold printing on Luxor parchment paper from the Fedrigoni paper mills. The work, which could be called the "organic register" of the civil and military administration of the late Roman Empire, is divided into two sections, corresponding to the two parts of the Empire, East and West; and for each it lists, first in an index, then separately, also illustrating their insignia and official titles, the officials; beginning with the prefects of the praetorium and of the imperial cities, Constantinople and Rome, and the remaining high offices of the central administration, then coming to those of the provinces. For each one, the territorial jurisdiction, the dependent offices or troops, as the case may be, and the composition of the officium are indicated. It is therefore a valuable overview of the organization of the Empire, providing information on the deployment of troops, state enterprises, and making known numerous place names, etc. The work (properly Notitia dignitatum et administrationum omnium tam civilium quam militarium ) can be dated to around 395 AD, except for some parts which can be assigned to the first decades of the 5th century.
