Description of the work
Description of the work
This work is from Nino Pedone's early years, a period in which he was even more closely connected to the 19th-century art that preceded his experiments. In this case, the chosen subject is a young ballerina in the foreground in front of some masks. Ballerinas became an important subject, especially with Degas, who chose to depict them in contemplative, almost intimate moments during various stages of preparation. Here too, the painter's spirit seems to be the same, intent on capturing a fleeting moment. The young ballerina appears focused, prepared, yet also apprehensive, as if it were the moment to appear on the grand stage of life, along with all its masks, but she must keep dancing, keep moving to emerge.
The style of each representation is necessarily influenced in part by the artist's choice of technique. In this case, we are dealing with a lithography, a type of graphic art. The word itself derives from the Greek and means "writing on stone." Indeed, the technique is based on the mutual repulsion of greasy and aqueous materials. After initially preparing a very thick stone slab, the artist begins to create his drawing with a greasy pencil. When the ink is applied to the stone, it adheres only to the drawing itself. Following previously marked lines on the stone, the sheet of paper is placed on the slab and the whole is pressed, thus transferring and imprinting the design onto the paper. Each color requires a separate plate. Thanks to the unique nature of the technique, the graphic before us almost resembles a pencil drawing, precisely because of the porosity of the stone, which, unlike other graphic techniques, results in a less incisive line. Nino Pedone chose to create a monochrome, ivory-colored background and then superimpose his drawing. The drawing itself, at first glance with its incisive and rigid lines, could almost recall an engraving, but it creates very dense, close-spaced and often short lines, creating a reverberation of light.
Nino Pedone was born in Palermo in 1940. From a young age, he was exposed to the world of art, which led him to work as a teacher and restorer. His art history studies combined with a profound knowledge of art and the masters of the past provided him with the foundation to pursue his own artistic path. They also made him a skilled and sought-after art expert for his precise interpretations and evaluations of numerous works. As a young man, he sought refuge in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, where he drew inspiration from 19th-century painters, later moving towards a more innovative and conceptual approach. Especially in his early years, he also explored graphic art, producing lithographs and etchings. Later, he began to focus on an almost two-tone art, exploring the use of white and creating figures in broad, two-dimensional fields.
