Description of the work
Description of the work
The Niki Berlinguer tapestry, created by the eponymous artist based on a design by Umberto Mastroianni, features an abstract composition in which contrasting colors create a dynamic visual structure. Although the design doesn't depict a recognizable figure, the alternating wavy and circular shapes suggest a sense of fluid movement. The neutral, warm ochre background brings out the more intense black, red, and green tones, adding depth to the work. The work is executed using the "petit point" technique, a meticulous process that allows for compact, detailed surfaces. The choice of colors and shapes creates a balance between harmony and contrast, with soft lines that intertwine seamlessly. The result is a tapestry with a strong visual impact. Niki Berlinguer, born Corinna Adelaide Augusta Fidelia, who in 1950 married Mario Berlinguer, a widower and father of Enrico, for her second marriage, was called “the great lady of tapestries,” which she created using the ancient petit point technique, modeled after works, forms, and figures created by other artists such as Carlo Levi, Corrado Cagli, Renato Guttuso, and Giuseppe Santomaso.
