Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
Painter Nello Jovine specializes in these delightful genre scenes, full of freshness and vivacity. Jovine is always skilled at characterizing his subjects with delightful details that pique the viewer's curiosity and imagination. Formally, he leans toward a somewhat romantically idealized realism. The painting is vibrant and lively, like his subjects. There is good tonal and chromatic unity.
Nello Jovine was born in Cava dei Tirreni in 1935, but lives and works in Battipaglia. He trained at the Academy of Naples under the guidance of Professor Casciaro. From 1947, he began painting everything around him, focusing primarily on portraits and landscapes. In 1954, at just eighteen years old, he had his first solo exhibition in Salerno, then participated in the Quadrennial Exhibition in Rome. In 1967, the Harnot Gallery in New York organized a major exhibition of his work. In 1973, he exhibited at the Accademia Tiberina in Rome, in 1979 and 1981 in Milan; in 1989 in Messina, in 1990 in Cesenatico, and in 1992 in Casalpusterlengo.
