Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. Thus, Nando Chiappa's work is inspired by simple genre scenes, episodes of peasant life, or snippets of everyday life, yet everything is always transfigured into a lyrically abstract vision that enhances the expressive potential of color.
In his pictorial research, Nando Chiappa employs a process of reduction of phenomenal reality in order to achieve perfect formal balance. Thus, the entire painting becomes a delicate interplay of color juxtapositions and balanced tones. To achieve this, Chiappa forces nature into an expressive medium and simplifies it, emphasizing its purely aesthetic values. Thus, space becomes essentially two-dimensional, allowing the artist to break it down into interacting chromatic zones, and the figures are depersonalized. This work is part of a series in which Nando Chiappa employs a highly dynamic pictorial style with an impressionistic leaning. The result is an expressionist representation of nature where, in addition to the lyricism of color, the painter's gestures themselves take center stage.
Nando Chiappa was a painter originally from Cinisello Balsamo, born in 1934 and passed away in 2017. His painting career began in the 1970s, when he began his self-taught career, frequenting the masters Leonardo Spreafico and Osvaldo Pivetta. He later gained great popularity, exhibiting his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. He received the Ambrogino d'Oro from the City of Milan, was named a Knight of the Italian Republic, and in 2007 was awarded the Spiga d'Oro civic honor for his strong connection to Cinisello Balsamo. Among his favorite subjects was the Balsamo countryside, so much so that he was nicknamed the "painter of the fields," but was also known as the "painter of altar boys."
