Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this watercolor, Edmondo Giuliani creates a sort of expressionist landscape. Phenomenal reality undergoes a significant process of synthesis, reduced to a two-dimensional surface. The subjects are reduced to the essentials with a few diluted brushstrokes. Compared to expressionism, however, Giuliani finds a lighter chromatic balance, as well as a softer and more gentle curvilinear rhythm.
Edmondo Giuliani was a painter originally from Jesi, where he was born in 1915 and passed away in 2007. Essentially self-taught and a street painter, as he liked to call himself. A very popular figure in his hometown (of which he received honorary citizenship in 2000), he nevertheless exhibited his work in various shows in Italy and abroad. Only late in life did he attend painting courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Macerata.
